Eiko Cafe - Menu

Fresh. Authentic. Timeless.

Objective

This project involved designing a menu for Eiko Cafe, a local restaurant near my home. While the concept is fictional—I haven’t officially reached out to the owners (yet!)—it was an exciting opportunity to showcase my design skills and creativity. I approached this as a passion project, a chance to challenge myself and demonstrate what I’m capable of when given the freedom to explore. It was both fun and rewarding to bring this idea to life, and it reinforced my love for creating practical, visually appealing designs that could exist in the real world.

Designing the Eiko Cafe Logo: Balancing Authenticity and Creativity

For the logo, I drew inspiration from Asian aesthetics while staying true to the restaurant’s identity. The original menu used basic typography without any symbolic elements, so I saw an opportunity to elevate it. I thought, Why not add a crab? Why not inject a bit of fun and personality? My goal was to create something simple and realistic, yet creatively engaging, to reflect the restaurant’s vibe. This exercise wasn’t just about designing a logo—it was about understanding the thought process behind crafting a cohesive menu. From layout to typography, imagery to hierarchy, every detail plays a role in creating an inviting and functional design. It was a rewarding challenge to balance creativity with practicality, and it deepened my appreciation for the art of menu design.

Sustainable Design: Crafting a Menu with Purpose

I decided to explore the idea of printing the menu on cardboard—a choice that not only saves on materials but also adds a unique, sturdy feel to the design. This approach aligns with eco-friendly principles, emphasizing the use of natural, sustainable materials. The texture and durability of cardboard give the menu a tactile quality that enhances the user experience, while also making a subtle statement about conscious design. This decision reflects my belief that good design should be both functional and thoughtful. By choosing materials that are environmentally friendly and visually appealing, the menu speaks for itself, showcasing how small choices can have a big impact. It’s a testament to how design can be innovative, practical, and sustainable all at once.

Subtle Calls to Action and Elevated Aesthetics

While the menu draws inspiration directly from the restaurant’s original design, I introduced a few strategic tweaks to enhance its appeal. Adding the Eiko Special at a slightly lower price creates an enticing offer, and incorporating subtle discounts throughout the menu adds a layer of intrigue. These elements work together to create a call to action, encouraging customers to engage—whether it’s trying a new dish or leaving a review. I also prioritized decluttering the layout, taking cues from high-end restaurants that often downplay or subtly hide prices to maintain a sense of elegance. By tucking prices into parentheses or using a more discreet design, I aimed to achieve a classy, refined look. This approach not only elevates the menu’s aesthetic but also allows for flexibility in pricing, where special offers can override the standard prices. It’s a thoughtful blend of functionality and sophistication, inspired by proven design strategies.

Takeaway

I didn’t realize there was an entire field dedicated to menu design and engineering, but diving into this project opened my eyes to how every detail matters. A menu isn’t just a list of dishes—it’s a carefully crafted experience that has to balance aesthetics with functionality. I learned how typography, layout, pricing strategies, and even material choices can influence customer behavior and perception. This project was not only fun but also eye-opening. It pushed me to think differently about design, blending creativity with strategy. I’m proud of the result—a menu that feels unique and thoughtful—and I’d love to see this concept translated into other formats, like a website or digital platform. It’s exciting to think about how these principles can be applied across different mediums, and I’m eager to explore more opportunities in this space.
